The Gilgit Valley has been the commercial hub of the region for centuries. It is the capital town and administrative center of Gilgit-Baltistan Province. The area is open to the Hunza, Ghazir and several tributaries of the Indus, as well as many of its surrounding waters. Gilgit has been an important city on the historic Silk Route, which has facilitated the passage of religion in the corridors. Sheena is the language spoken in Gilgit, while English and Urdu are widely spoken in the region. Of particular note, Nelter is a beautiful Greenland surrounded by high-altitude glacial lakes, the best resorts for winter skiing.
